informARTive_Lino Cut

Following on from what Fatima and Emma did I have scanned the logo in and refined the text further. The SU really like the roller marks on the logo, saying it gave it a "more art feel". I feel the text though has too much of an forced approach and not enough clarity, so editing it further so it now has a clear title. Overall I am happy with the logo with every party enjoying the process and being happy with the outcome it is a success.

Conscious Creatives_Web Presence

Using Facebook as a simple social platform to reach out to more people who might not be able to attend our meetings, as I understand FE cant make it to our Wednesday 12pm meetings so this acts as a way for them to connect and keep up to date with progress and events.

Pinterst, allows members to share ideas which can be used in the green and social space.

PPP Presentation

InformArtive Lino Cut

After contacting Emma and giving her some advice on the process and sending her and Fatima the PDF I felt like I was being involved in some art direction from my design as I have never designed work for it to be passed on to be completed to a peer.

Conscious Creatives notes:

With informaARTive being on the 17th of March, there is an urgency for the posters to be printed and posted. I have completed the logo  for informARTive but it has not been lino cut and printed as of yet. Two students from level 5 printed textiles have requested to do the process as they are required to do the process as past of their curriculum, but ave not finished it as of yet.

InformARTive logo development and crit

informARTive will seeks to engage & increase awareness of sustainability in the College. Using 100% reclaimed & recycled materials, we will be creating infographics of interesting information on how the College is sustainable.

The logo is to be simple and type based. Looking at different methods of making the 'ART' stand out is a simple test. Choosing to look into colour for the the sustinabale work done, I chose to look into green:

After a review from the SU they wanted it to be 'i' and caps 'ART'. Placing it in a box helps to reinforce the logo to stand alone and be its own entity. They did not want the colour green so I opted for a purple hue:

Finalised Logo. I am happy that the work was very easy to do with a quick turnaround. I have discussed that the logo could be lino cut to give it more personality and human feel, which they really like:

Barlceona_Trip_Museu del Disseny

Museum of DesignWith  complete focus on art, design and graphic design based museum with a 4 separate exhibitions looking into a range of art culture. With the first exhibit looking t what is design, it was a very engaging experience to witness beautiful design and context first hand. With Graphic Design in particular being relatively new to Barcelona and Spain, roughly 20-25 years, It was great to see some Catalan Graphic Design, some print were amazing. The museum was free as well which was great so that we could access all departments.

Barcelona_Trip_Museu de la Musica de Barcelona

The museum hosted the history of music with different instruments and another exhibition about the development of electronic music throughout time. The museum had a host of instruments, information and even an interactional room were you could play on the instruments in the museum. It was a really insightful place and gave me a bigger idea on the background and craft of music. One exhibition was on electronic music and the equipment used when it was first starting which was very interesting.

Sustainable Society_2

Looking for a unique and memorable name for the society as the sustainable society does not engage anyone and sounds forced. So brain storming for a name which is relevant but also signifies that we are designers and creative thinkers is something which I want to push further.

I liked the name 'Branch' as it is a branch from LCA and holds the obvious link to a tree. I have decided to look into visuals for the potential name and logo. Below are some mock ups for a potential logo:

Overview

After speaking to John about the visits to Barcelona, he gave us some great advice about contacting the agencies through speaking Spanish and English to show consideration and to also show the studios that we are aware  in the Spanish culture. Due to the time of year the studio were very busy which is understanding and considering the time frame in which we contacted the studios this could have been done much more in advance. However out of all the studios we contact we had one confirmed visit and contact with two others which is something to look forward to.

Barcelona_Trip_SOLO studio visit

Solo is an independent graphic design studio specialising in corporate identity, editorial design, packaging and typography. Solo is a studio founded in 2011 by Óscar Germade in Barcelona. After exchanging emails with Oscar, we arranged a visit for the Tuesday to talk about design and his work. This was a exciting and nervous prospect because we are in a different country and also because we haven't met Oscar before. Turns out he was a very welcoming and happy to spend time with us over a coffee in his new studio. Great guy.

Conversation

We decided to create a small range of questions to ask him and the conversation we had with Oscar is detailed below. The interview was taken in note form as we forgot to record the conversation unfortunately.

What makes Barcelona design culture so different to cities?

Design in Barcelona is relatively new, it falls from heritage. In 1992 when the Olympics came is the first time Barcelona started to use graphic design.

Do you think it is important have the MCR/BCN connection and why?

Yes, there a lot of similarities between the two cities, Manchester isn't the capital of England and Barcelona isn't the capital of Spain but they are both cities that are dominant in design. The culture and music scene is also very influential.

What do you think of northern design?

It's Fresh! theres a new wave of design and people and it's natural

What is your favourite work done / designed?

Simon Miller, 1st client, created a good relationship, working close with them and still work to this day. International client from LA! Also El Pas Semanal which is a newspaper supplement in Spain.

What would be your dream project?

The wayfinding and signage of a car park, I think there really hard to navigate, then hopefully Barcelona as a city.

What was it like setting up your own business?

Setting up alone was quite hard with the crisis in Spain at the time in 2011, in Spain you have to pay to work so even if you don't have any clients you still have to pay which is different to England.

What if any work / morals / ethics do you work to?

2 main — client - give them solution
            — focus on improving society and the environment through design decisions

Any advice for us as budding designers?

People want to design for money but that shouldn't be your first thought. Do and be the best designer you can be and the rest will follow. Look into designer Fernando Guierrez!

Overview

After our interview we exchanged business cards and asked Oscar to give us some feedback on our online portfolios which he was more than happy to provide. Overall the visit was a huge success and I really enjoyed my time at the studio and the advice given. My only regret is that we didn't take any pictures but we was in the moment to be thinking about doing that. This visit has given me a lot of confidence more so than visiting an agency in my own country because now I have experienced an international one which it's quite exciting. Unfortunately Oscar doesn't take on interns due to him being out of the office a lot and not being able to help provide support if someone needs help. However with this connection made in Spain it will be really nice to keep in contact and someone to visit and talk to in the future.

Barcelona_Trip_Gallery Visits

Consell de Cent in Barcelona was amazing, as it is full of design culture and was really inspiring to see everything on that street immersed into it. It's somewhere I would definitely recommend designers to visit has a given me a broader insight into curation, space and gallery design, which is a field I am interesting in.
